Google Suggest - Search Assist Review Part 1

In the first part of my segment on Google Suggest I will touch on appearance. To begin with, Google Suggest - like just about everything that Google developes, looks plain and ordinary. In the world of Autocomplete this is often better than being bold and beautiful. The reason is because the more plain and ordinary the faster the results. The faster the results, the more helpful the service. To date, only Yahoo and Apple have been able to boast a slick design without seriously affecting the results. But considering that Google has done pretty well with its flagship blue & white, I can understand their hesitance on building a beautiful autocomplete feature. So this leads to the million dollar question...is the lackluster look of Google Suggest the reason they don't offer it as a default option on their homepage? Or is the reason possibly because Google doesn't deem it profitable if its users actually find the result their looking for in one search. In the long-term, this strategy would hurt because ultimately consumers will use search engines that get them what they're looking for faster. This is certainly the case with Yahoo's Search Assist, and I can't help but think that Googliathon actually sees it as a negative if its users find what they're looking for quicker. After all, less searches = less AdWord clicks..
